Obituary:
Rev. George A. Isley III, of Stuyvesant, succumbed to a three-month battle with cancer on Friday, November 24, 2006. Born February 13, 1936 in East Orange, N.J., he was the son of George A. Isley, Jr. and Dorothy Curtin. He was married for 48 years to Carol Jean Carpenter of Charlton, N.Y. He is survived by his wife, his father, George A. Isley, Jr., of Lawrence KS.; his children, George A. Isley, IV (Skip) of Doylestown, Pa.; Geoffrey A. Isley of Grantham, Pa.; Colin E. Oravec of Knox, N.Y. and Meri F. Coler of North Lima, Ohio; and his 18 grandchildren.

George was a 1954 graduate of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake H.S., Wheaton College, IL. (1958), and Princeton Theological Seminary, N.J. (1961). He served as student pastor of the Malta Presbyterian Church from 1958-59, pastor of the Valatie Presbyterian Church from 1961-1976, and co-pastor of Christian Community Church from 1976 until his death. He was Chaplain at Berkshire Farms, Canaan, N.Y. from 1982-2001. He was the supervisor of the Healing Rooms at the Prayer Healing Center in Albany from 2001 until his death. He took numerous caravans to Mexico with teenagers from several churches, was involved and supported Youth for Christ ministry in the Albany area.

He was a member of many ecumenical associations for clergy, including the Columbia County Council of Churches, the National Chaplain’s Association, and the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference. He was also instrumental in the founding of Solomon’s Porch, in Kinderhook. N.Y.

Interment was in the Kinderhook Cemetary. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either a Christian Charity of your choice or the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211.

Dave Faris is a childhood friend and seminary roommate of George. He is currently the interim pastor of Christ Evangelical Free Church, in Lehighton, Pa. Libby Little, a graduate of George’s youth group in Valatie, was along on the first caravan group to Mexico. She was commissioned by George’s church to missionary service in Afghanistan in 1976. She and husband Tom are on home assignment and temporarily located near Boston with plans to return to Afghanistan.
Carlton Walker is a high school friend, college roommate, retired pastor and the Northeast Regional Minister for Conservative Christian Congregational Conference (CCCC). He lives in Niskayuna, N.Y. Pete Rogati grew up in the Valatie Church. His father was also the Isleys’ family physician for many years. Pete served as co-pastor of the Christian Community Church in Kinderhook from 1976–86 and currently lives in Cortland, N.Y.
Don Lundgren (violinist) is a high school and seminary friend and a medical missionary. He serves as missions pastor at College Church and lives in Amherst, Mass. John Henry lived with George & Carol from 1983 –85. He was mentored by George and commissioned to missionary service by his church in 1985. John serves as executive director of the Student Mobilization Centre (YWAM), based in Madison, Wisconsin.
Julie Oravec is George and Carol’s oldest granddaughter. She is in the Army and based in Fort Campbell, Ky. Moses Harrison worked with Chap as a family therapist and counselor at Berkshire Farms, located in Canaan, N.Y. from 1998-2003. He has served as chaplain there since 2003.
Dave Brown was led to the Lord by George. Dave is Pastor Emeritus at Community Fellowship at Princetown, N.Y., and currently a social worker at Ellis Residential & Rehabilitation Center. Jim Slater is the pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Valatie, N.Y., and Emanuel Lutheran Church, Stuyvesant Falls, N.Y.
Keren Gonzalez Flores came fourteen years ago from the extended church family at El Divino Salvador, in Mexico, to live with the Isleys for a year while she attended high school. Nate Meldrim is pastor of the Kinderhook Reformed Church, in Kinderhook, N.Y.
Hector Flores Bernal has visited in N.Y. several times and is currently an elder at El Divino Salvador, Toluca. Jeremy Coler is George and Carol’s oldest grandson. He is a senior in high school and lives in North Lima, Ohio.
Carol Abrahamson (soloist) is George’s sister. She and her husband, organist Dan Abrahamson live in Lawrence, Kansas. Steve Lalor is director of the Capital Region Prayer and Healing Center in Albany, N.Y., where George was supervisor of the Healing Room Ministry.
Bill Otterbeck has been co-pastor of Christian Community Church since 1985. He lives in Kinderhook, N.Y.
Carol Isley appreciates your many expressions of encouragement and condolences. Skip Isley, the oldest Isley child, lives in Doylestown, Pa. with his wife, Dana, and two sons.
